St Edmundsbury Borough, How rich are they?

If you read the newspapers, perhaps you will have read about the vast sums of money that St Edmundsbury have. But how much have they really got?

I tried looking it up, and admittedly I am no accountant but theses figures are not exactly clear. Perhaps this is the point, and as taxpayers they don’t want us actually knowing.

Have a look for yourself!

  1. The information is all there in the budget book via the link you have given above. The revenue reserves are 'earmarked', that is they are a collection of 'rainy day' reserves in various categories. Details on pg 112 (section 16).

The capital programme is explained in section 17 (pg 120). It shows that the bulk of the capital is committed to projects over the next few years.

You can also find some useful information in the Financial Statements @

More up to date information about the budget 2008/10. just agreed, is in paper Z541, which you can find by putting that reference in the search for council documents.

  4. For 'rainy day' read 'jamjar economics'. It's the 2009/2010 budget not 2008/2010 - another Geoffrey Boycott moment. If you want to know more, contact the Chief Finance Officer, email: liz.watts@stedsbc.gov.uk

Liz is a seriously clever woman. Paul was a music teacher and can play a nice tune on the piano. I particularly like the Theme from Exodus. Not quite Maksim but very pleasant none the less.

  5. David said earlier in these comments:

"One of Paul Farmer's tactical ploys is to divert attention away from the uncomfortable truth by 'marking' someone else's essay."

Looking at his last comment three words come to mind. One of them is 'kettle'.
